What a way to start the New Year! It has been cold: highs in the low 30’s and lows in the 20’s. When I went out to check on chickens, I was treated to this beautiful frost crystals coming from the base of a plant! My frostweed (Verbesina virginica) had “bloomed”!
Not actual blooms of course. The plant had flowered in autumn with large white flowerheads. Here are some more pictures and location information Frostweed propagates from seeds or roots so I am hoping for more next year. Although native to Texas, I have never seen it in far West Texas, so I think it must have come in through a seed mixture I used to start this garden.
